Looks like Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates may have an evil genius side after all. He is helping to fund an energy start-up that may hold the key to ultra low emission and maintenance mega power production. Intellectual Ventures is the name of the company that is partially funded by Bill Gates and has a unit called TerraPower. TerraPower, run by a former Microsoft Corp. executive, Nathan Myhrvold, is reported to be in preliminary discussions with Toshiba Corp. on developing a small-scale underground nuclear reactor that would make nuclear power safer and cheaper.

A spokesman from Toshiba said the two sides were talking about how they could collaborate on the nuclear technology. He also said that discussions were still in the early stages and that nothing has been decided on investments or development.

These reports come from Japan however TerraPower said it has been meeting with the "nuclear community" and presenting at conferences but declined to comment on whether they met with Toshiba. So it would seem that Toshiba likes the idea more than most perhaps.

TerraPower has been publicly saying that its reactor technology could run for decades on depleted uranium without refueling or removing spent fuel from the device, making it safer and cheaper not to mention more socially acceptable than today's reactors. Even Bill Gates has described the device in interviews as being able to run buried deep under ground and capable of operating without human intervention, however would take years to develop. Currently the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission doesn't have a certification process for these type of reactors.

Toshiba on the other hand is developing a reactor that can operate continuously for 30 years. Along with TerraPower a small player in a field of established concerns trying to develop smaller, and safer nuclear reactors. Nuclear and Defense supplier General Atomics said it is working on a smaller nuclear reactor that would run on spent fuel, back in February.

As President Barack Obama is trying to spur new investments in nuclear power with over $8 billion in government loan guarantees announced back in February, Bill Gates' recent focus on nuclear power is said to be fueled by an interest in developing new power systems for developing countries. He also has made public his interest in combating climate change.

Green home living is nothing new to the Gates household who boasts much of their home in the ground where the climate can be controlled more efficiently. Things are getting stirred up at the Federal Trade Commission. Pamela Jones Harbour an outgoing Federal Trade Commissioner had a few things to say about Google in a series of three FTC privacy roundtables held this month. Harbour who is scheduled to leave the agency in April, delivered remarks that had some choice words for the Internet giant. Calling the company's decision to transform our private Gmail address books into public social networks, "foolish." Adding that the way Google handled the "Buzz" roll-out was "irresponsible." and says, "Google constantly tells the public to 'trust us,' but based on my observations, I do not believe consumer privacy played any significant role in the release of Buzz..... When Gmail users created their accounts, thy signed up for e-mail services, and their expectations did not include social networking."

For many people who value their privacy, this could be a huge deal. We the people often dole out all kinds of personal information on the Internet that allows identifying your name, your email address, even Social Security number. What many people may not know is that studies show that the typical citizen or consumer is identified far beyond the norm of personal digits, and may be hitting more home personally than ever before.

With services like Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr are oceans of personal data e.g. birthdays, photos, videos, and personal gossip. Computer scientists and experts say that such seemingly innocuous bits of self-revelation can increasingly be collected and reassembled by computers to help create a picture of a person's identity, and that includes obtaining ones Social Security number.

"Technology has rendered the conventional definition of personally identifiable information obsolete," said Maneesha Mithal, associate director of the Federal Trade Commission's privacy division. "You can find out who an individual is without it"

It turns out that in a class project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that received some attention last year, Carter Jernigan and Behram Mistree analyzed more than 4,000 Facebook profiles of students, including links to friends. The pair was able to predict, with 78 percent accuracy, whether a profile belonged to a gay male.

Other companies such as Netflix awarded $1 million to a team of statisticians and computer scientists who won a three-year contest to analyze the movie rental history of 500,000 subscribers and improve on predictive accuracy of Netfilx's recommendation software by at least 10 percent, according to recent article in The New York Times. But have recently shelved the project amidst F.T.C. concerns.

"Personal privacy is no longer an individual thing," said Harold Abelson, the computer science professor as M.I.T. "In today's online world, what your mother told you is true, only more so: people really can judge you by your friends." Collected together, the pool of information about each individual can form a distinctive "social signature," researchers say.

Both Vitaly Shmatikov, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas, and Arvind Narayanan, now a researcher at Stanford University were able to identify more than 30 percent of the users of both Twitter and Flickr, even though the accounts had been stripped of identifying information like account names and e-mail addresses. Shmatikov says "when you link these large data sets together, a small slice of our behavior and the structure of our social networks can be identifying."

To make matters even worse, two researchers from Canegie Mellon University published a paper last year reporting that they could accurately predict the full, nine-digit Social Security numbers for 8.5 percent pf people born in the United States between 1989 and 2003 - amounting to nearly five million individuals.

The Adam vs the iPad

If you ever need to break away from the office and still maintain your computing necessities, you might already be wondering about a tablet PC.

If you think the iPad is something that you might consider buying, then you may want to consider its main rival competition. Introducing the Notions Ink "Adam" tablet an Android-based device using the latest-gen NVidia Tegra chipset and an innovative low-power consuming display from a company called Pixel Qi's. So how might this new contender hold up against its favored opponent the iPad?

From all known accounts, it looks like a good chance iPad has met it's match. Everything from size to functionality seems to be improved on the Adam.

One particular quality to mention in the Adam is the battery life, 16 to 160 hours! 160 hours of course isn't with the backlight mode on but still that's pretty good compared to the iPad which has up to 10 hours of surfing on the web.

The screen size for the iPad is 9.7 inches and the Adam boasts a 10" inch Transflective LCD which is remarkably clear even in the sunlight. Several videos are now available and the Transflective screen really does wonders in the sunlight. Also Adam is capable of outputting to a dual monitor with 1080p HD video whereas the iPad maxes out at 576p/480p via its optional component cable. This may be somewhat bizarre considering though the iPad has a little bit of an advantage with the on board display being 1024 x 768 vs. Adams' 1024 x 600.

Another very cool feature about the Adam is that it houses a 3MP Autofocus camera that can pivot 180 degrees to face the front or rear of the device. The camera allows you to video (say for live presentation or class) and take notes simultaneously. The iPad for whatever reason doesn't have a camera and some other tablets either don't have one or may even have two, one for the front and another for the rear.

On the back side of the Adam it has a track pad much like the touch pad on your laptop however it's in a position where your fingers are naturally located when holding the tablet. This makes it easy to use when surfing in browser that may require you to click links and so forth without having to bring your hand around to tap the screen for every link.

Over all the Adam looks pretty nice. Some things like the track pad being located on the back roughly where your left hand would be. Maybe they'll come out with a special one for slower right handed people:)

Multi-monitor, also called Multi-display, Multi-head, and Dual-Monitor, is the use of multiple physical display devices, such as monitors, televisions, and projectors, in order to increase the area available for computer programs running on a single computer system. Microsoft describes this setup as "one of the best ways to improve your productivity". Randy Pausch recommended multiple monitors for improving personal productivity in his Time Management lecture. Contemporary versions of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and X Window System (used by GNU/Linux) all support multiple monitors. Dual monitor support once depended on specialized proprietary video drivers supplied with few video cards, along with a multi-display-supporting GUI system. Support for multiple monitor configurations was added as a standard feature in Microsoft Windows in Windows 98. It has been a standard feature in all versions of Apple's Mac OS X (introduced in March 2001), and was a standard feature of the first color Macintosh II introduced in 1987. By adding up to two additional video cards, the Mac supported up to three monitors, although operating system support for multiple monitors wasn't introduced in Windows until the mid 1990s. The all-in-one Mac SE/30 featured a small black & white screen, but could drive an external color monitor.

Recent news talks about the Google lifting the veil on its planned Chrome operating system. Computers powered by the software will become available later this year and may pose a threat to Microsoft, whose Windows software powers the vast majority of personal computers and most of the multi-tasking world including trading computers.

The new operating system, which is obviously tied to Google's Web browser, also named Chrome is not trying to be a better version of Windows. Instead, it is aiming to shift users toward its vision of "cloud computing," a model in which programs are not installed on a PC but rather are used over the Internet and accessed through a Web browser. In Google land, a user's data will also reside on servers across the Internet, rather than their PC. Already most PC users rely on cloud computing, using their Internet browsers to access things like e-mail, photo albums and digital maps.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at net-books. Google already talking to partners about the project and plan to make it available to consumer's in the second half of 2010.

Google demonstrated an early version of the Chrome operating system on a net-book during a news conference at its Mountain View headquarters. The Chrome desktop looked similar to the Chrome browser. Using application tabs, which are meant to run the programs people use most, like e-mail or calendar software.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. Designed to be lightweight and fast enough to get you on the web in seconds. Figuring that most of what people experience takes place on the web, Google has gone back to the basics and completely redesigned the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

A net-book using the operating system booted in seven seconds, and Google said it was working to make the start-up time even faster, however they we're reluctant to share information regarding which hardware makers were planning to build machines that used the operating system, but said it would work closely with manufacturers.

Google is pushing to make net-books that are slightly larger than today's models and include full-size keyboards. I imagine this could become a rival to the ipad and the OX as well. Let's see!

Some of us are easily dazzled by technology and for Farhad Manjoo, (Writer for The New York Times) a trip to Google's sprawling headquarters in Mountain View, California was "a delirious experience" he says. In one article he mentions seeing a replica of SpaceShipOne, computerized toilets, and solar-cell-covered parking lots. However what caught his attention the most was what he referred to as "pedestrian" programmers' desks, and more specifically their computer monitors.

After meeting several Gmail software engineers, he discovered each sported a spectacular configuration of screens. Based in many different configurations e.g. pairing wide monitors with tall ones, huge screens married to small ones, and several displays in a series. He said the impression was "in addition to building a Web-based e-mail system, they were helping Norad keep tabs on the nations airspace."

For years now, we've all seen the multi-monitor displays in movies, on TV, and even in the real world. The many studies by specialists in human-computer interaction suggest that combining multiple displays can significantly enhance your productivity. The theory simply being that the bigger your display, the more of your work you'll be able to see and the more you'll be moved to do.

Global electronics company NEC, and researchers from the University of Utah conducted a study of office workers who regularly perform several common tasks. The only difference was they used various monitor configurations. The results clearly showed that people who used 20-inch dual monitors were 44% more productive at certain text-editing operations than people using a single monitor.

It wasn't long ago that multi-monitor displays were reserved for stock brokers, film editors, and Google engineers, but not so much for the average Joe in the office. However, prices on LCD panels plummeted by almost a third and continued falling thru 2009, making getting that dream desktop more feasible.

With that in mind Farhad decided to set forth upon a personal quest for multiple monitor Zen, so he got his hands on several displays and paired them up in every way possible.

First he tried using two 22-inch Dell wide-screen monitors side by side, creating one very wide screen that measured roughly 38 inches diagonally. Then, he rotated each display so that its long side ran vertically which allowed him to read a full document on the screen without scrolling. He said he even copied a style he saw at Google when he placed one screen vertically and the other horizontally- basically forming the letter T as if on its side with the wide screen used for working with side-by-side windows, and the tall screen for focusing on a single, long document.

He also tried a couple configurations with his laptop including one wide monitor and one tall monitor. He said to have found the "Cadillac Escalade of displays" when he combined an enormous 30-inch wide screen monitor to the equation, and confirmed the researchers' findings.

As office workers, we all know getting things done on the Internet can be very distracting, for even the best of wills. All in all Farhad found that two 22-inch monitors, one placed vertically and the other horizontally, was a much more cost-effective way to bolster his productivity, than adding a 30" monitor.

When People tell me about all the great things multiple monitors has done for them, I often chuckle just a bit because they hadn't found out sooner the overall impact of Multi-Screens functionality. Set to launch in June, the cloud gaming service OnLive, a new gaming service that will allow people to "stream" popular games like "Assassin's Creed II" over the Internet. This new system is said to work much like watching TV shows or listening to music online.

OnLive will be available to Mac and PC users via a browser plug-in that will let you play games hosted from OnLive's servers. This is what's becoming commonly known as "cloud computing." That also means that players can buy or rent games with older, less powerful computers, without having to purchase a console such as Xbox or PS3.

OnLive also promises to release a "MicroConsole" device, which will let you play games on your TV, later this year. Along with other devices added subsequently, OnLive also will be allowing multi-player user ability on all the game platforms. Making it easier to get your gaming party started.

Steve Perlman founder and CEO said "We want to slow the impact of people jumping on to our servers just a little bit."

The "MicroConsole" -launching later this year, will be a inexpensive, cassette-sized adapter that plugs into a TV set to stream games. OnLive expects to see the tiny console to be more popular than its PC and Mac streaming service.

Perlman said it's working, and "assuming you have a decent Internet connection," gamers who've been testing the service are "playing normally."

With Youtube and tons of other Flash based videos, it may be easy to assume that streaming video games would be the next big thing. However, streaming video games is a bigger challenge than music and movies, because games cannot be easily compressed into smaller files before streaming over the Internet. Here's a question. Ever launch Excel or Internet Explorer and have to wait a whole half a minute or even up to a minute for the program to open and become usable? Sometimes when you close your browser, does a window on your computers monitor appear saying that "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem," and asks you to "send error report?" Your computer may even run fine outside of this, however if your programs are taking a long time to open, then it may be because your system does not have adequate amounts of RAM.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is used as a temporary storage place for memory by your computer. This memory is in use when tasks are being executed by different programs. Therefore, you should have enough RAM memory to process all the tasks you would be requiring of the computer at hand. If you don't have enough RAM it will cause a major slowdown of your computer while it is booting up or even just regular processing tasks.

Anything less than 1GB of RAM is not enough nowadays for basic operations. Check and see how much RAM you have by clicking Start, then right-click over "My Computer" and selecting "Properties" from the drop-down menu. Sometimes it can take a moment for the page to populate and once it does, it will tell you how much RAM you have installed on that computer.

Increasing RAM is relatively inexpensive however, please note that RAM is not a universal in its compatibility, so before buying, you need to know what kind of RAM you computer uses. Installing the wrong RAM can lead to several different problems all together.

Find out what the maximum amount of RAM that you can install in your computer. This can generally be easily found at your computer manufacturer's website. Getting to your RAM in a typical desktop computer is a moderately easy task. Unplug the power cord from the back of your computer. Open the case as shown in your computer manual. In most cases you don't even need the manual to show you how to do this. It is generally a simple matter of unscrewing one or two screws on the back or bottom of the computer and exposing the computer's motherboard.

Locate your RAM slots. If all of your memory banks are full, you may need to replace your RAM rather than just install more.

To remove old RAM press apart the securing clips on both ends of the RAM slot, and the module will pop up slightly. Lift the RAM module straight up and out of the memory slot.

To install the new RAM line up the notched edge of the RAM module with the tab on the bottom of the RAM slot. The RAM only fits if you line it up correctly so you don't have to worry putting it in backwards. Press straight down on the module, applying firm but gentle pressure on both ends until it clicks in place, and the securing clips will snap into place.

Replace your computers cover and reattach the power cords and cables. Power up the computer and the system should automatically recognize the new memory.

You should be good to go. Windows XP Users:

1) Go to START -> CONTROL PANEL

2) Select APPEARANCE AND THEMES -> DISPAY

3) Select the SETTINGS TAB and click IDENTIFY which will display a large number on each of the monitors. This shows which monitor is going to correspond with each icon.

4) Click the icons and drag them to the real world position in which the monitors are set up.
Click APPLY or OK

That’s almost just about it, your screen will most likely flash and Windows may ask you if you’d like to keep the settings and if all is well and everything looks good, then go ahead and hit OK. Viola! You now have a Multi Screen / Multi Monitors to work with. Enjoy!

To change the primary monitor in Windows XP you can do the following:

Steps:

1) In SETTINGS TAB of the Display Properties Dialog box, click once on the monitor icon that you would like to make the primary monitor.

2) Click to select the USE THIS DEVICE AS PRIMARY MONITOR check box. This box will not be available if you select the monitor that is already your primary monitor.

Windows Vista Users

Note: Windows Vista is designed to be a little more user friendly. When I plug in my additional monitor, Windows automatically sets it up for me, MOST OF THE TIME. So, I’ve included these directions for the times when Windows is unable to set up your monitor on its own. Also, as mentioned above, I’ve included a short video for the Vista setup, just in case you have trouble finding anything.

Configuration Step:

1) Go to the START button (actually, it’s the circular Window logo in the bottom left hand corner of the screen on most Vista desktops.)

2) Select CONTROL PANEL from the right hand column.

3) If you are in Classic View, then select CONTROL PANEL HOME.

4) Under the Appearance and Personalization, click ADJUST SCREEN RESOLUTION

5) Now you should see two or more black boxes if you’ve already connected your additional monitor. The icons are representations of the real world position of your monitors. You can drag and drop the icons so that they accurately represent where your multiple monitors are located on your desk.

6) Now select the additional monitor by click the icon and make sure the check box below that says, "Extend the desktop onto this monitor" is selected, then click APPLY. Once complete, this process will enable your Multiple Monitor Setup to perform seamlessly and allow you to navigate through all monitors.

7) You may see the screen flash, and the desktop should now be extended to show Dual Screens. You should get a little pop up that asks if you’d like to keep these settings. If everything looks good, click OK. If something isn’t right, click CANCEL button and try one more time from the top.

There you go! Just about everything you need to know to setup your Multiple Monitor Display. Now you can finally paste that old black lab lounging peacefully on the old wood porch (like great Grandpa had in the Ozarks of MO) as a Dual Monitor Wallpaper. Or you can even go a step further than that. It all depends on the individual as to what type of Dual Monitor Backgrounds he or she may or may not use. In a world that strives to be politically correct, it's good to know that there's a Multi-Monitor Display on your desk to show all the different colours of diversity simultaneously!
